Meet the Hannah who does the Eating

I’m Hannah, and I’m a freelance journalist covering food and culture news, usually in Brooklyn. I’ve written for Brooklyn Magazine, Hell Gate, Chalkbeat, and City & State NY, among other places. I’m also an MFA student at the New School, where I study creative writing; my fiction has been published in HAD, Maudlin House, and Chill Mag, and anthologized in collections by Allegory Ridge and Thirty West.

You can read more of my writing at my website. I’m also on Instagram, if you think I’m cute but aren’t into the whole writing thing.

Why is Hannah Eating?

When I lived in Washington, DC post-grad, I was underwhelmed — by my life in general, of course, but also by the food scene. Why was Starbucks the only cafe in the whole city where you could sit down and use wifi? Why was the name “José Andrés” stamped on the menu of every single fine dining location? More importantly: where was the innovation, the joy of cooking?

I wasn’t a journalist, back then. Instead, I was working as a teacher, and I was perennially exhausted. All I wanted to do after work each day was to eat good food. I mostly started Hannah is Eating because I needed an outlet, something light that could distract me from my work.

When I quit teaching, I didn’t have a plan: I worked in a DC bagel shop for a while, and I taught people how to speak Italian. On the side, I kept writing about new restaurants and cool food excursions. Then I made the momentous decision to return to New York City, the place I love most, and I used this newsletter as proof I had written before to pitch my first news article about a long-beloved bakery moving down the block. Now, here we are.
